Overview
Description:
Shore Friendly Pierce assists qualifying marine shoreline landowners in stewarding their shorelines. Our goal is to help landowners make informed decisions about managing their shorelines in a way that is environmentally friendly. We offer assistance to help landowners keep their shorelines natural and unarmored, or voluntarily remove unneeded shoreline armor.
We provide:
- Free informational site visits for qualifying properties,
- Guidance on understanding shoreline erosion, bluff erosion and coastal flooding,
- Support for shoreline stewardship, including native plantings, drainage improvements, and qualified bulkhead removal projects.
- Technical and financial support for bulkhead removal and beach habitat improvement projects.
Free Site Visit Program:
Qualifying properties can receive a free site visit to assess conditions and receive customized recommendations for managing risk and/or improving habitat. Please complete the Site Visit Request Form on our website to join our waitlist. We will contact you next time we are offering site visits.
We love working with groups of neighbors on the shoreline! You can request a private workshop/beach walk for you and your neighbors at any time. Contact our Shorelines Program Manager to request a neighborhood workshop/beach walk.
Do you have a question about your shoreline, erosion, coastal flooding, managing vegetation/trees, or making a development decision? Pierce Conservation District can help direct you to resources for Puget Sound Shorelines and help you make informed decisions for your property.
Workshops for Puget Sound Shoreline Homeowners Include:
"Your Shoreline, Your Legacy: Helping You Manage Your Marine Shoreline"
There are unique ecological, geological, and vegetation management challenges associated with owning property on Puget Sound. The Shore Friendly Program is here to help landowners make informed decisions to protect their property and protect Puget Sound. Workshop topics include erosion, drainage, trees and views, and shoreline living.
"House Relocation as a Shore Friendly Option"
In some cases, moving a home away from a shoreline hazard can be a cheaper, safer, and longer-lasting solution than an engineered approach such as a seawall or slope stabilization. Moving houses is more common than you may think! Learn more in the workshop excerpt from house mover, Jeff McCord.
"Living with Sea Level Rise"
This workshop, presented by Andrea MacLennan from Herrera Environmental and Jeff McCord from Nickel Bros House Movers, focuses on the drivers and impacts of coastal erosion, how sea level rise can intensify erosion, and what homeowners can do to prepare for future conditions.
