Forest Carbon Works’ Conserve program helps private woodland owners grow resilient forests, secure
long-term carbon storage, and earn premium payments with minimal site visits.
Overview
Description:
Forest Carbon Works’ Conserve is an Improved Forest Management (IFM) carbon program designed to
increase net carbon stocks in privately-owned US woodlands. It enables enrolled forests to become more
resilient to the impacts of climate change, be better stocked with larger and older trees, and to maintain
high growth rates. It can often also result in higher wood production levels over time.
Forest carbon stocks are continually at risk of degradation or conversion, particularly given the frequency
of timber market fluctuations and land transactions largely motivated by timber and alternative land use
value. Forest carbon projects remove these risks, with guaranteed monitoring, reporting, and verification
for 60 years (or more, depending on the contract length our members choose)1. The long-term result is
bigger, older, and more resilient forests – many with enhanced productivity.
Conserve members’ premium annual payments are made possible by our proprietary forest inventory
and monitoring technology, as well as the market-preferred forest management certifications we include
to our members as a free service.
Our program’s industry-leading contract options let members benefit from expected future voluntary
carbon offset credit price appreciation and to choose the contract length that works best for them.
We conduct an initial on-site forest carbon analysis within the first 6 months of membership. Thereafter,
we only need to visit our members’ land a few times over the entire standard 25-year payment period.
Members simply collect their payments and continue to enjoy the land!
Eligibility:
Privately owned, minimum 40 acres, located in the United States, up to date on taxes, no easement on
timber harvest (harvest must be legally allowed, but NOT required).
Financial benefit:
Standard Payment Model:
Our standard payment offer for qualifying landowners is $10 per acre per year, or $250-$500 per acre over the 25-50-year life of the Conserve Membership Contract, paid in annual installments.
The first Annual Payment is made within 30 days of signing the Membership Agreement, and – once the first year is completed – is made annually thereafter until year 25, at which time you or your successors can opt in to additional 5-year payment terms up to 5 more times, for a total of up to 50 years’ worth of annual payments. These payments are guaranteed to all members in good standing, every year.
Revenue Share Model:
If members want to participate financially in the significant upside expectations for carbon credit pricing over time, they can opt into a 25% credit revenue share annual payment model as soon as we are able to peg their credits’ market value to a trailing 12-month (TTM) market price – usually within the first two years of membership. Generally speaking, more productive land tends to generate a better return for landowners under Revenue Share, whereas the Standard Payment tends to be better for landowners when forestland is less productive.
We work with members to assess actual market price growth and trend and decide whether a revenue share option is likely to be more profitable for them. And because we know open markets will always involve some price fluctuation, we allow members to change payment models every five years (i.e., at each 5-year anniversary of their membership).
